A family that struggles to be "normal" while adversity appears.
“Next to normal” is a rock musical written by Brian Yorkey (“For 13 reasons”) and with music by Tom Kitt, which tells the story of a family that struggles to be “normal”, while as happens in all families, adversity appears.
It’s the story of Diana Goodman, a woman with bipolar disorder, and the effects the illness has on her family. The work also touches on topics such as loss, suicide, the abuse of psychotropic drugs, ethics in modern psychiatry or the critique of suburban life.
The work travels a wave of emotions that shakes the audience with its force, amuses them with its humor and leaves them renewed and moved. “Next to normal” works as a relief in times where the perfect does not exist and being “almost normal” is normal.
